Bone, Muscle and Joint Health

Written by Dr Steven Gunn (MBChB. BSc. CVIT)

In order to keep the hundreds of muscles and bones functioning optimally in our body, we require a number of factors to all play their role.  One cannot choose one’s parents, so obviously we are born with certain genes which we inherit from our parents and grandparents.  Persons born with good genes that help promote strong bones, joints and muscles have an advantage, but it is not a guarantee of healthy bones, joints and muscles for life.  This requires a healthy diet with certain specific nutrients, as well as exercise, adequate sleep, exposure to sunlight (UV rays), plenty of mineral rich alkaline water and the avoidance of certain toxins, chemicals, certain medication, smoking and excess alcohol.

In addition, to all these factors mentioned above, to maintain healthy muscles, bones and joints, especially over the age of 40 years and after the menopause in women and “andropause” in men, when hormone levels start to decline (e.g. estrogen, progesterone and testosterone), as well as a decline in collagen and elastin in the skin and joints, supplements need to be taken.  Middle aged and senior citizen men and women need to have their nutrition levels (e.g. calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, vitamin D3, albumin) checked, as well as their hormone levels (e.g. testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, cortisol and DHEAS) every year during their annual medical examination.

Women should also have a Dexa Bone Scan done every few years (men too, if necessary) to check their bone density and look out for osteoporosis.

There are 2 main types of hormone replacement therapy, namely pharmaceutical (HRT) and bio-identical hormones (same as what your body produces) (BHRT).Consult an integrative physician for advice with respect to BHRT.

What is necessary for a strong healthy skeleton, joints and muscles is minerals, vitamins (e.g. vitamin D3 and C), amino acids (protein building blocks), collagen peptides, omega 3 essential oil, MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin.  Bones need to experience a force, muscles and tendons need to stretch and muscles need to contract against resistance to grow and stay strong.  This is why exercise such as sport, gymming, dancing, cycling, running, swimming, pilates and yoga are so important.

XTREME HEALTH.CO.ZA has a unique multi-nutrient bone, muscle and joint food supplement powder, which has a combination of all or most of the constituents necessary for strong and healthy bones, muscles and joints, as well as for general health.  The product is called XTREME BONE, MUSCLE & JOINT FORMULA 2 POWDER (500 grams).
