Background:
Vitamin C is one of the essential and most abundant vitamin nutrients necessary for life, growth, development and maintenance of optimum health. Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid or Ascorbate is a water soluble anti-oxidant with multiple functions in the body. One of the most well- known diseases associated with a deficiency of Vitamin C is called SCURVY, which used to affect thousands of sailors who used to sail long distances over many months in the past without eating enough foods containing Vitamin C. Vitamin C is not found on its own in its purest form as ascorbic acid, in nature. It is found in fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits (such as lemons, oranges and limes), as well as strawberries and kiwi fruit, bound to other nutrients such as bioflavonoids and minerals for better absorption and function, as found in the Acerola plant and other plants just mentioned. The average person needs a minimum of 100 mg Vitamin C per day but much higher doses if you are ill, have a viral infection, under stress, or a weakened immune system.
