The human skeleton consist of 206 bones. Bones are made of minerals and collagen, primarily, and bone is a living cellular structure with cells which make it (osteoblasts) and cells which break it down and replace it with new cells (osteoclasts). Bone is made from protein in the form of collagen which requires amino acids and vitamin C and co-factors and the minerals calcium, phosphorous and magnesium, forming most of the solid structure. Vitamin D and Boron and Vitamin K2 are necessary for the absorption of calcium and the formation of bone and teeth. Cartilage which lines the joints at the end of bones consists of protein and glucosamine. Glucosamine can help rebuild cartilage and reverse joint damage. Sulphur is also necessary for the building of connective tissue. There are about 639 muscles in the body. Muscles are made predominantly from protein (amino acids) especially the branch chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, valine) and glutamine. They require nerves for electrical stimulation (therefore electrolytes) as well as calcium and magnesium for contraction and relaxation, and mitochondria to produce energy in the form of ATP. Oxygen is carried to the muscles via myoglobin (an oxygen protein carrier), similar to haemoglobin which carries oxygen to the organs.

One of the main components of bone after calcium and phosphorous. Strengthens bones and teeth
Prevents headaches
Helps control blood sugar
Necessary for healthy immune system
Reduces inflammation
Helps promote healthy sleep
Helps combat fatigue and adrenal exhaustion
Important to prevent PMS
Helps reduce blood pressure, depression, anxiety, confusion, seizures, convulsions, hyperactivity, constipation and calcium deposits e.g. kidney stones and hardening of arteries
Kelp (Fucus versiculosus):
Kelp is one form of seaweed with multiple health benefits. Other forms of seaweed are nor, akame, kobu, dulse and the blue-green algae spirulina and chlorella
Contains multiple nutrients – Protein, minerals, fibre, poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), carbohydrates, vitamins C, B2, B6, A, E and K. Minerals include calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron and iodine.
Kelp also contains anti-oxidants
Can help for an underactive thyroid gland (hypo thyroidism). Iodine is necessary for the formation of the thyroid hormones FT4 and FT3.
May help with diabetes by helping to regulate blood sugar and insulin levels
Can help reduce inflammation and osteoarthritis
Can help support the gut and the healthy bacteria
May assist with weight loss (contains alginate) which can block lipase up to 72%
Can help reduce cholesterol levels and improve cardiac health
The soluble fibres bind to bile salts and acids. The body then uses cholesterol to replace the cholesterol in the bile thereby lowering the cholesterol by up to 18% lower
A shortage of iodine can promote medical disorders such as hypothyroidism, PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), prostate disorders, autoimmune diseases and diabetes
Kelp helps protect against breast cancer, lung, prostate and colon cancer (contains fucoidan)
Kelp can help reduce the harmful effects of radiation
The anti-oxidants like the carotenoids and flavonoids in kelp have multiple health benefits
MSM (Methylsulphonylmethane)
A chemical compound naturally found in food, for example, fresh vegetables, dairy products and meat and supplements.
Food source of sulphur (sulfur)
Has multiple functions in the body
Helps build cartilage and connective tissue
Reduces inflammation (reduces cytokines TNF-a and IL-6) and pro-inflammatory prostaglandins
Helps muscle recover after injury
Helps reduce allergic effects
Helps with arthritis and all joints
Has detoxification properties
Helps to reduce pain
Helps to reduce excess of fluid build-up in cells causing swelling and pressure on nerves
Helps clear blood vessels
Improves transport of nutrients and biological substances in and out of cells by improving cell-membrane fluidity and function
Works together with vitamin C and collagen
Helps accelerate recovery after exercise
Helps prevent ulcers
Helps treat skin conditions such as rosacea, acne. Topical sulphur has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties
If taken in excess, can cause upset stomach or diarrhoea
Can help with constipation and weight loss
Increases GSH (Glutathione) levels.
Enhances immune system
May have anti-cancer properties. Studies have shown MSM can inhibit the growth of cancer of the stomach, colon, oesophagus, skin, bladder and liver.
Appears to damage cancer cells DNA and promote cancer cell death (apoptosis)
Anti-cancer spread (metastasis) properties
Glucosamine:
Glucosamine sulphate is a naturally occurring chemical found in the human body (also found in nature) and in supplements.
Found specifically in the fluid in the joints
Can be made in the laboratory
There are many different forms of glucosamine. Most of the research has been performed on glucosamine sulphate and hydrochloride.
Can be used for osteoarthritis, joint pain, jaw pain, (TMD Tempero Mandibular joint Disorder), knee pain, back pain, interstitial cystitis (bladder disorder), glaucoma, weight loss, HIV/AIDS and MS (Multiple Sclerosis)
May help for joint pain caused by oestrogen blocking drugs such as are used by oncologists for patients with breast cancer
Collagen:
Collagen is a protein substance in the body and is the most abundant protein in the body accounting for approximately 33% of all protein content
Has multiple functions and is derived from the Greek word “Kolla” meaning “glue”, holding the body together
There are many different forms of collagen (more than 16), but 4 main types I, II, III and IV
Type I: (90% of body’s collagen). Made of dense packed fibres. Forms the structure for the bones, skin, tendons, fibrous cartilage, connective tissue and teeth
Type II: Made of more loosely packed fibres. Found in elastic cartilage in the joints.
Type III: This collagen type supports the structure of muscles, organs and arteries
Type IV: This type is found in the various layers in the skin
Collagen is found in many places in the body and is the protein structure found in the bones, ligaments, tendons, discs, muscles, skin and also in the teeth, eyes (corneas) and blood vessel walls.
With the ageing process less collagen and elastin is produced, reducing in both quantity and quality
Less collagen and elastin means that the skin starts to sag and weaken. Cartilage also weakens and degenerates with age
The body needs the amino acids glycine and proline plus vitamin C and copper to maintain healthy collagen and connective tissue
Hydrolyzed collagen has been broken down to small molecules called peptides which are better absorbed and used to rebuild new collagen
Benefits of taking Type I and II hydrolyzed collagen include repairing joints, increasing muscle mass (if combined with strength training) and increasing the quality and appearance of the skin.
